In
a book that is a sharp departure from traditional "picture books" with
dreary medical text published by plastic surgeons to explain the
benefits of their craftsmanship, Face to Face is the first effort to
tell the story of cosmetic surgery expectations and results-from the
patient's viewpoint. Written by Dr. James Nolan and edited by Ursula
Bacon, Face to Face invites readers into actual interviews with more
than fifty women and several men who relate how they arrived at the
decision to alter their outward appearance. Motives, readers learn, for
cosmetic surgery reflect individual's goals for beautification and
self-improvement, including "staying young in a youth-oriented job
market." Here, in a well-written presentation, patients discuss results
measured against hopes, pain factors, and the emotional highs and lows
of the healing process. Revealed are the changing emotions of patients
with their deep personal motives and secret ambitions for an improved
nose, augmented chin or flattened ears. If the book has a message, it
is one that says, "Live up, if you dare, to the image of yourself that
you harbor in the deepest region of your heart."
